Disaster Strikes

Well, here it is. After months of searching and weeks of boring agony, finally a church that is as close to our old church as possible without actually being our old church. This church has potential oozing out of its ears. Not only is it joining the ranks of non-denominationalism, it has six guitars, one keyboard, one drumset and people who see that when you offer an option other than traditionalism, there are people who will take you up on that. It’s interesting that this church has more young adults than any other church I’ve visited. Oh the irony.)

Luke 13:1-9, “1Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
6Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. 7So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
8″ ‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’ “”

The Bible tells us that even in Jesus’ day there were disasters. The Bible also tells us that just before He returns the world will see the greatest period of disasters it will ever see. The Bible doesn’t tell us about all the disasters that are to happen in between. The logic used to be “This disaster must have happened because we’re sinful.” Sometimes people will stand up and say as much. It’s not true. According to Jesus all that matters is that you repent so you don’t perish.

Matthew 5:44-45, “44But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”

So when people say that this disaster was caused by evil, sin, or unrighteousness, know that it wasn’t. Just after the disaster there is the searching for the living, the rebuilding of homes, and the coming together of a community. Tragedy and disaster happens without explanation. It hurts to the core to loose a loved one, a home, everyone and everything you hold dear. It hurts a lot to put it all back together again, to pick up the pieces, and to make something good the result of something terrible. Time it seems, does much healing, but knowing you’re not alone helps.

...Anyway, that's just how I feel about it ... What do you think?
